As a variation on the "classic" thread, what anime from 2000 and beyond do you think will become a part of classic anime canon? I'm particularly interested in the last few years, as that's when I started to drop off... do you think some of the biggest shows in recent memory will last, or were they just a passing fad? I really don't know what to put here since I don't fit into the current demographic. I have series I WANT to put here but I think they would be considered too niche for the current gen. What do you all think, please share! My few pics: Excel Saga Azumanga Daioh Fruits Basket Fullmetal Alchemist FLCL Spirited Away

Yeah, I'm more eager to write about this than Hikarichan's other post. That's probably because I'm a sucker for validation. Anyway, here goes:

Anime:Haibane Renmei Last Exile Gankutsuou Black Lagoon (1st and 2nd Barrages) Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu (a.k.a. Hare & Guu) Kino's Journey Planetes Considering I havent heard of those series, and some of the others arn't very well known either, I wouldnt expect them to become as classic as Bebop or Eva...And isnt GitS 1996 american release?

I could easily see anything in that list becoming known as a classic since, in my opinion at least, they are all very good animes.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex season one was released in 2002, the second season was released in 2004, and the movie was released in 2006.

*sheathes sword, holsters gun, extinguishes flame thrower* Thank you Neo. I'd also like to say that the idea behind this thread seems to be what series YOU think will be classic. God knows that I don't agree with some of the other series/movies/OVAs that people have mentioned in this thread (and its sister thread), but everyone's entitled to their opinion. So, Dreamer, what are yours?

I'd have to agree with most of Nester05's post. Of course, I like to divide these things up by decade, and since we are at the end of one, the next ten years may have a different definition of 'classic'. Here's some of my picks:
(Partially shamelessly copied): Anime: Haibane Renmei When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) Last Exile Paranoia Agent Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (both seasons) Azumanga Daioh Kino's Journey Mushishi Bakemonogatari (Ghostory) <-- (this one's not done yet, but the first 12 eps. are fantastic) Eureka Seven Genshiken S1
Movies: Again, anything Ghibli and Miyazaki Anything by Satoshi Kon (Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika) The Place Promised in Our Early Days Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
OVAs: Voices of a Distant Star FLCL Read or Die Macross Zero

Oh, I guess I got confused by the wiki on GitS, anime film =/= the anime itself. Already classic, IMO though. I liked "Place promised in our early days", that was a cute movie. To me, a classic anime has to be well known and of good caliber. Like in 10 years you'll still hear people talking about it similarly to Eva. I dont know, I'm having a hard time using my brain. I cant even remember half of the anime's I've seen at the moment. I think a lot of Adult Swim anime's will become classics though, since they're practically second to none that air anime in the US and get a lot of viewers.

The first three posts essentially hit on everything I was thinking of so I won't bother copying them. My additions to what's already been said:
Samurai Champloo Kaiba (within indy circles) Now and Then Here and There (technically started in 1999 but ended in 2000 so I'm putting it here) I shudder to think of those Shonen Jump series as becoming "classic", but there's at least one of relative quality I'm willing to put on my list: Death Note Nana Nodame Cantabile
I'd also like to echo Kino's Journey and Last Exile, two of my favorites
Personal picks that I WISH would be classics but I don't think they'll ever reach that status: Ergo Proxy Dennou Coil Boogiepop Phantom
That's all I can think of off hand that isn't already here.

'Now and Then Here and There' was really good but very disturbing... and while I think what I may perceive as a classic should be one, with other repetition causes familiarity, forcing itself into the classic category whether it's actually good or not.
