They left a basketball, by accident, against a heater, partly melting the ball. The ball is the main part of the mask, but they added more stuff, ending up with what you see in the picture. The guy in costume is a space man. Plot unknown at this point. Pop was about 17, so this should be high school, early 1960s.

Quite certain neither person is an alien. I've met the guy in the mask several times. Correction: I'm quite certain that both people are either not aliens or wearing disguises (outside of the pictured costume) that make them indistinguishable from humans
From Pop: The inspiration was a basketball. ((removed1)) little brother ((removed2)) allowed a basketball to roll against a space heater in his bedroom. It blew out one side of the basketball in a ragged hole that suggested it could be used as headpiece. ((removed1)) cut eyeholes, inserted sunglass lenses for eyes, and constructed a very colorful clay covering modeled after the mutants in This Island Earth.
