Digging out the leech line for our septic tank. Figured it would be much, much faster with a backhoe. They have backhoes at Home Depot, but none of my family knows how to use one. I realize we might be able to figure most of it out, but i'd prefer finding someone who's used one before.

Maybe if you called Home Depot they would know what would be better to use. ;

I know what needs to be done- dig, down to leech line, 1.5 ft either side of the line, as far down as I can manage below the line, fill 1.5ft all directions from line w/ gravel, fill rest w/ dirt.
I can do it the really slow way, with a shovel, which is what i'm doing now. Or, I can rent a backhoe and do it in a single day. Trouble is, I don't know how to work a backhoe.
Equipment's not the issue; operational knowledge is.
They rent backhoes at Home Depot. I've already got a shovel and I do a bit of digging each weekend. I'd like to get the job done in a day or two instead of months.

They probably do know how to operate any piece of equipment they rent, but that doesn't mean they offer labor to go along with the equipment. If they did that, there would be a liability issue. Ah- There has to be at least one person at each store who knows how to operate the backhoe, otherwise they wouldn't know if you returned it broken or not.
It turns out my step-daughter's boyfriend is rated on some construction equipment, but not backhoes. If I end up in the 'can probably figure it out' zone, i'll have him do it since it won't cost me anything for labor.
What i'm looking for is someone who actually uses backhoes currently. Priced it with the septic guy the other day. $2,220-$2,400 or so for parts (gravel, dirt, pipe), equipment, and labor. Woof.

Oh, I thought they could teach you how to use it before you rent it instead of "experimenting" with a maybe thousand dollar machine.
Hooray for step-daughter boyfriends?
G'luck!

Well I wish you the best of luck finding someone to work it for you. But If you need any help (with anything but the backhoe) just let me know! ^w^
