Hiroya Oku’s masterpiece GANTZ has been serialized in a weekly comic magazine, YOUNG JUMP (SHUEISHA Inc.), from 2000. People who are supposed to be dead are gathered by "GANTZ" and forced to fight "aliens"… The comic has strong charismatic popularity, thanks to the unique story, selling over 10 million copies of the 26 volumes.
Due to the intense action and strikingly original story, a movie adaptation was once considered impossible. However, after NTV led the adaptations of DEATH NOTE and 20th Century Boys to success, a movie adaptation of GANTZ became possible with the director, Shinsuke Sato, and two talented actors, Kazunari Ninomiya (Tekkonkinkreet, Letters from Iwo Jima) and Kenichi Matsuyama (DEATH NOTE, Detroit Metal City, Norwegian Wood). The most awaited movie project has two parts, the first installment coming in early 2011, and the second in spring 2011.
[Story]
Kei Kurono (Kazunari Ninomiya), a college student, accidentally meets his old friend Masaru Kato (Kenichi Matsuyama) on a subway platform. There, Masaru, having a strong sense of justice, tries to help a drunken man who fell on the railway track. He asks Kei to help him, but the train comes and they are hit…
However, when Kei and Masaru wake up, they find themselves in a room of a flat. There are other people who are also supposed to be dead, but they are all locked in the room. Nobody knows why they are here or what they are supposed to do here, except for the mysterious big black sphere called "GANTZ"…
GANTZ orders the people to kill "aliens", providing them with fighting suits and weapons. Is this a world of game or reality? Seeing people and aliens slaughtering each other, Masaru is anguished, but Kei gradually feels satisfied as he discovers his fighting ability…
With "life and death" as the theme, this is a new type of suspense action entertainment!!

Is anyone else looking forward to this? I am, if only to see whether they do a decent job or completely screw it up. I haven't read/watched Gantz in years, so.
Though from what I hear they're going to try to make the movie "family-friendly" - that is, they'll be taking out a lot of the violence. Which is silly, because violence is the whole point of the series. :\
