Being as I am from the previous generation of anime fans, I'm curious to know what current anime fandom considers classic anime. For all intents and purposes, I am going to define "classic" as being anime that still withstands the test of time ten years beyond its creation and is considered "must-see" if you're an anime fan (we're talking 1999 and before). I want to see your lists to see how much agreement we have across generations... Here are some of my picks being an old-schooler: Series:The Rose of Versailles Maison Ikkoku Ranma 1/2 Kimagure Orange Road Slam Dunk Irresponsible Captain Tylor Neon Genesis Evangelion The Vision of Escaflowne Cowboy Bebop Revolutionary Girl Utena Movies:Akira Anything Studio Ghibli: esp. Nausicaa, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke Castle of Cagliostro (Miyazaki does Lupin III) Project A-ko OVAs:Gunbuster Giant Robo Read or Die Macross Plus Here is Greenwood (I'm not biased or anything )

Opinions will vary ^_^
Series: The Slayers Serial Experiments Lain The Super Dimension Fortress Macross The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross Genesis Climber Mospeada (in the US, these three were put together into what many of us know as Robotech)
Movies: Ninja Scroll (not the series, no offense to it) Ghost in the Shell Black Magic M-66 Akira Princess Mononoke Vampire Hunter D (not Bloodlust) Robot Carnival
OVAs: Iczer Girl Iczelion M.D. Geist Devil Hunter Yoko (made ecchi/naughty humor + action more mainstream, I'm sure)

Stuff that holds up 10 years later... *cracks knuckles* There is going to be a LOT of overlap with Hikarichan's list, but that's because we're from the same generation. Anyway, here goes:
Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion Escaflowne Trigun Cowboy Bebop Tylor Utena Initial D Infinite Ryvius
Movies: Anything by Ghibli and Miyazaki (natch) Ghost in the Shell Patlabor 1 & 2 Ninja Scroll Perfect Blue The Wings of Honneamise Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade Akira Memories Macross Plus: The Movie The End of Evangelion
OVAs: Macross Plus Jojo's Bizzare Adventure Battle Angel Ruroni Kenshin OVAs Gunbuster
BTW Hikarichan, I had to edit this post because ANN said Read or Die came out back in '01.
