As you may or may not know we'll be airing Excel Saga this year [2009-2010] during club because not enough people have seen what is arguably the funniest anime of all time.
That being said, I've been torn as to whether to air the dubbed or subbed version of the show, and wanted to know if anyone else who has seen both versions wants to weigh in on the matter. I haven't re-watched it in about 3 years so my memory might be a little hazy, but if I recall correctly both the dub and the sub were fairly top-rate.
So which do you want to see in club? Excel is equally incomprehensible in both, so I can't really make up my mind which I prefer.

Cool, Excel Saga! Truth be told I prefer the English dub; it just seems to have more energy, and you really can't beat "Nabe-Puchu punching" But I think it'll still require subtitles heh heh.

Cool, Excel Saga! Truth be told I prefer the English dub; it just seems to have more energy, and you really can't beat "Nabe-Puchu punching" But I think it'll still require subtitles heh heh. Cool. That's how I originally watched it too. There's a problem putting up subs and dubs at the same time tho (as anyone who saw us try and do that with cromartie high school last year can tell you). More often than not the subtitles differ in places from what's being said in the dub, which can be rather distracting if they're put up side-by-side. For example, here's a line from the first episode of excel saga, the sub and the dub version: Sub: The bullet of justice that destroys evil! Dub: The bullet of justice caps evil's ass! In this case (and if I'm correct the same thing happens with many other series) the sub seems like a direct translation of the Japanese script, whereas the dub has been modified by the director and voice actor to seem more natural to an English-speaking audience. Since posting this topic I've reviewed a couple of the episodes, and at this point I'm pretty sure I'll be airing the English dub (which seems to have a more hilarious translation, as the example above illustrates) unless someone can come up with a convincing argument otherwise.

I am definitely liking the sub version albeit the first episode.

Maybe you can alternate? Japanese Audio and subs one week, English the next?

I think Excel's engrish voice is really annoying, and I can read subs faster than I can understand 75% of what she's saying in engrish. But I'll tolerate either. Or subs with engrish dub, then I'll tune her voice out like I do with japanese audio.

Excel's voice isn't that bad Dreamer. The humor of the show overshadows and also takes into account how annoying excel is, which is a great aspect of the show.

Yeah I know that. But when you have to sit there for 24 episodes listening to her ramble on, you know?

I found Excel's voice less annoying when I made the effort to actually figure out what she's saying. At least 85% of the time her dialogue is flat-out hilarious. I'll admit it's a shame that it's hard to understand/ endure her rambling, but to me the hilarious dialogue is worth it.
Also, on the notion of watching the dub with the sub... I noted before that the reason I chose the English dub was because the translation was different from the subtitles and I thought the dub's translation was stronger. As such putting up the subtitles with the English dub would be distracting and also defeat the purpose.

I'd suggest dub for a couple reasons. 1. You have to be a speed reader to get anything Excel says! 2. Like Stub said, subs would be a distraction. 3. Crack on random...yeah, sub would work, but dub works better in this VERY rare occasion.
