Dear Greenwood Anime Society,
As you all know, Andrew Stebens, our current president, has yet to be confirmed to be the president for next year. As such, I, Sasha Turk, who happens to be his girlfriend, will be running the club for 2010 - 2011. We will all miss him as a president, but we need someone who has been in the club awhile to run it.
As new president, I am going to make a lot of changes to the club. Here is why, our viewings have not been getting people at alll. I'm sorry, technology has advanced and we can't simply just do 6 anime viewings on Friday. Many students and their friends refuse to go to anime club because a lot of people simply download the episodes and watch on their own free time. Anime has become a passive hobby that people do on their own. Before, people relied on clubs to get the subs, but now people find their own or make their own subs.
Secondly, many people aren't social especially when it comes to anime. Why is that? I believe many people refuse to go to anime club because they are embarrassed, scared, and feel very othered.
This needs to STOP. And I really mean it. A club needs people who are active with a caring community of members. It is in my effort to get to know new members, but it is also in my effort to encourage all of you to be friendly, open minded, and accepting of everyone so that new members feel like this is a great club to be in.
How will we do it?
Viewings:
Next year, we will not be viewing 6 animes. I've come to the conclusion that the viewings are too long, and we loose a lot of members this way. Why? Because we are all human, we need our sleep, we like our Saturdays, we are college students and we have homework, and the list goes on. I've decided that we will run 4-5 animes instead. My guess is 4, but I'll see what people want. Here is how I will pick the shows:
First Viewing: The first episode of a new anime each week (This means that I will be ONLY showing the first episode of a new anime that people might be interested in; it will be our spotlight anime of the night.
Second Viewing: An old school series. This will be a series that people may have heard of, but may have missed it because they were too young to understand or simply, a classic everyone will enjoy.
Third Viewing: This will be our modern series. This series must be made within recent years, and can be a pop culture phenomena (something that everyone has been talking about within the last couple of years).
Fourth Viewing: This will be our Kickback & Relax series. This series will be a show that everyone will enjoy, and not have to strenuously think about.
Tentatively Fifth Viewing: For those of you anime fans, like me, who prefer the odder animes, this will be our Trippy series or our Experimental series. I'm pretty sure most anime fans hate this kind of stuff, so that's why it's tentative. It will only be shown if people demand it. I could however make this a special viewing, but I'm not sure on it yet, we'll talk about it.
Special Viewings:
Now here is some of the fun stuff. Special viewings will be for people who wish to watch later in the night. They will be switched around every week so that we can keep it fresh
HENTAI POWER HOUR For these shows, you will be CARDED. I cannot let anyone under 18 watch these. You must show me some qualifications. We will observe these shows civilly and with an open mind. The shows will consist of age markers, such as the first hentai, the most influential etc., and will be of yuri, yaoi, and classic hentai. I will make decisions on these. These will not be shown every week.
EXPERIMENTAL ANIME & DISCUSSIONS As you know, I already had this as a fifth viewing, but I may encourage this as a series that we will discuss and maybe even debate about. This will be a series for people who interested in discovering the elements and purpose of the anime itself. Everyone is welcome.
MOVIES This will be when our movies will be shown. I will show several movies, we will pick them out, and I'll show them later in the night if people are interested.
Club Actives
Here are some things I've planned for us to keep us active:
Survey: On the first day of club I will get everyone's names, their favorite animes and least favorites, what they expect from the club, birthdays and contact information on an index card. I will use this information to run the club throughout the year. Your favorite anime might get shown! Birthdays will get acknowledged as well.
Anime Mascot: I will draw several designs for a mascot, and we will use it for future reference. We gotta let people know about our club! This will include T-shirt designs, pins, posters, ect. that will encourage people about our anime club.
Events: We will have special events other than potlucks, such as a Maid Cafe, Video Game night, Drawing Competitions ect. Gundam model building day and the Anime shopping trip will still be available. (The Maid cafe will consist of serving beverages, such as tea and coffee. This will also be a chance for cosplayers to dress up)
Bring your cooked treats: I will bring treats every week, (healthy mind you, but tasty) to encourage people to sit back and relax while we watch the shows.
Acknowledgments : I will be showcasing people's favorite voice actors/actresses, artists, and singers weekly to show people other aspects of anime that people like.
Talk to someone new: I will heavily encourage a days where you will talk to someone new in club and you will come back and report to the club what you learned about them. Don't be shy! It's a great learning experience that I will enforce so that people feel more open about around the club. I will also regulate this, so that things do not get out of hand. We are all fans, and lets treat each other fairly. Everyone will have a chance to speak, I will keep track.
UCR Students: I cannot stress enough for you who are future UCR students to encourage your friends and other people who might be interested in the club!
I think that about sums my plans. I will update this if need be. But for now, this is my plans for next year.
Thank you very much,
Sasha Turk
