Thanks for putting the list up. I'll do a search of series I've seen and edit this post with some *decent* shoujo. Did you know Shojo Beat is ending in July??

Did you know Shojo Beat is ending in July?? Oh wow, seriously? So many magazines have been going out of business. One of my personal favorite publications, Electronic Gaming Monthly, went down a couple of months ago, following in the wake of my favorite magazine of all time Official Playstation Magazine (which went under about a year ago). They had some great columnists. If that Shonen Jump magazine goes down too I'll loose my only source for Shonen Jump manga. I hate reading them online and there's NO WAY I'm paying for all those individual volumes...

Shonen Jump is just a tiny bit bigger than Shojo Beat, so I wouldn't be worried. They say the mangos will continue to be made, just sold in volumes or something I guess. But it was because their mother company went bankrupt that they sacrificed the magazine to the economy gods.
I been reading NANA (also an animu). I'm not too big on the art and the main character is pretty much a bubble-head, the typical shojo mango.
I was thinking maybe to cater more towards the dudes, since theres only...3 girls that are in watching the club's anime. And one of those girls isn't big on shojo anyway. But I'll still search for one that everyone might be able to stand.

Lol at "othersex". Maybe we should put it to a vote. I was also suggested "Skip Beat".

Skip Beat! I'm betting is awesome. One of my current fave manga! I think it could go well for both guys and gals. And NANA's anything but "typical" shoujo IMHO; it's one of the rare gems that really gets to the heart, internal conflicts and motivations of all the players. Very rarely does a manga author develop characters like Yazawa Ai does; why it's still the top-selling shoujo series in Japan! I'm not a Hachi fan either (she's a flippin' idiot), but the character dynamics and the raw emotion (and the drama!!) in the series is absolutely compelling. She's still my favorite manga-ka; Paradise Kiss is one of my all-time favorite manga... That being said, neither would play well at Greenwood anyway. But that aside, I'm trying to think of shoujo that doesn't run too long; Nana and Kaleido Star both run over 50 eps. It might be better to find a series that fits in one school year. Skip Beat! currently fits the bill at 25. Others that I think may go over well with a mixed audience are: Honey & Clover - split up between two seasons - drama about college art students and their relationships, amazing soundtrack! Aishi teruze Baby - main chara's a playboy who takes care of his abandoned toddler cousin AWWWWW Nodame Cantabile season 2 would be awesome - was disappointed we didn't watch it this year Gakuen Alice - kooky comedy about elementary school kids with powers Ghost Hunt - as title suggests, a team of high schoolers taking down the ghosties Gokusen - josei comedy about the daughter of a Yakuza mob boss who teaches delinquents Hataraki Man - josei workplace drama/comedy by one of the queens of josei manga Moyoco Anno (yep, married to Hideaki Anno of NGE fame) Jyu Oh Sei - think sci-fi Lord of the Flies Special A - comedy about elite prep schoolers competing to be the best; supposed to be loads better than the generic manga I think His & Her Circumstances would also be a great choice - still an amazing romantic comedy by any standard sans the last few eps. There's always Fruits Basket - dunno the last time anyone's watched this one Others that run long but are deserving of a watch: Cardcaptor Sakura (sentimental fave but it's CLAMP!!) Magic Knight Rayearth - again, CLAMP Revolutionary Girl Utena - I'd really rec. this! Awesome mindf*ck! And I really wanna recommend these for the heckuvit: Emma: A Victorian Romance - if you like gentle period pieces with fantastic attention to detail, this is your show. Cross Game: Adachi Mitsuru is considered a master shonen manga-ka when it comes to sports and romance; this is his most recent baseball romance story brought to anime form, and I think it's worth trying just so everyone can be exposed to his work. Are you guys going to preview Eden of the East? This one has piqued my interest. I know you all watched Shangri-La; any good? And just for fun, here are links to preview guides for the last three anime seasons for anyone interested from ANN: Spring 2009: www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2009-04-03Fall 2008: www.animenewsnetwork.com/fall-2008-preview/2008-10-04Spring 2008: www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2008-04-08From Random Curiosity: Spring 2009: randomc.animeblogger.net/2009/03/30/spring-2009-preview/Winter 2009: randomc.animeblogger.net/2009/01/03/winter-2009-preview/Fall 2008: randomc.animeblogger.net/2008/09/29/fall-2008-preview/Summer 2008: randomc.animeblogger.net/2008/06/29/summer-2008-preview/Spring 2008: randomc.animeblogger.net/2008/03/31/spring-2008-preview/Winter 2008: randomc.animeblogger.net/2007/12/30/winter-2008-preview/

I really liked Honey & Clover, and when was the last time CCS was shown? I remember it was being shown when I first started attending club. So far Eden of the East has been good as well, although this last episode was kind of strange.

Besides how Hachi's an INCREDIBLY easy girl, I'm still reading the mango after the 30th chapter. It takes a long time because of all the talk (versus taking a five second look at a Bleach stare-off-athon page). But it is pretty good. However after all the hoopla with the singing in Macross (besides it just being Macross), it might not be a good idea to show another band anime. And there's a lot of sex.
I hated Special A because it was basically a giant thingy-tease. She never beats that bastard.

Nana and Kaleido Star both run over 50 eps. It might be better to find a series that fits in one school year. Actually, everything after episode 26 in Kaleido Star is essentially filler, so I was going to only show the original 26 episodes if it's picked for club. Nana, on the other hand, is too long, and maybe too amazing to be appreciated To answer some of your other questions, I liked Shangri-La a ton, other than the needless fanservice (I'm speaking of the main character's design. It's Range Murata, so it's automatically beautiful, and I'm sure male viewers appreciate it, but it seems out of place...). As for Eden of the East I like it too. I've come to understand that it's only listed to run about 11 episodes, followed quickly by a movie, so I might just put it in the club line-up for next year sans preview. Anything directed by Kenji Kamiyama is good by default in my book. As for the stuff you recommended I'll look through it. I know Sasha's gonna make me watch Utena at some point, and I've heard a thing or two about Skip Beat so I'll check that one out too. If not we can always default to Nodame Season 2, because even people who haven't seen the first season can enjoy it, and I know the guys like it too. Those CLAMP series are great too, and I had a couple of requests for Magic Knight Rayearth... Decisions decisions... I'll probably see what the club has to say about the rest of the shows and decide from there.

Magic Knight Rayearth is 50 episodes too...But I'm assuming we'd just be watching the first half (25 eps=1 arc?). You should see if the last episode of the arc doesnt have some sort of lead-in to the next arc though. I'd rather watch " X" (24 eps and still CLAMP), since I started it but couldnt find the rest of the episodes (d**n you, Netflix). Jason Thompson wrote about X, "even without a proper ending, the series has a lot going for it. For one, it's absolutely gorgeous", adding "the Storytelling isn't Clamp's best, but it's hard not to get swept up in the momentum toward the day of destiny". Also, regarding Kaleido Star, after only watching one episode of it, you can already tell all the blond kids are siblings, making for some failcest like in that movie "Blades of Glory". That kid thats attracted to the main character is a family failure for not being able to live up to his brother and sisters name and is probably treated like a servant, the girl is extremely jealous and will probably try to sabotage the main character or she might accept the main character and become best friends with her (unlikely), and the dude might fall in love with her creating a complicated love triangle between the non-athletic sibling and the dude and the girl and the main character. But jeebus, asking the main character whose only skill is coordination to do a stunt that only the head honcho of the show whose had years of practice at it can do. That little puppet the schizophrenic main character will probably give her some sort of simple advice on how to accomplish it though. Thats just what I've inferred.

Also, regarding Kaleido Star (insert predictions here) Thats just what I've inferred. I've watched the first five episodes so far while checking it out, and so far none of these predictions meet with what's happened. The puppet does say something to help her if I remember correctly, but his role isn't really what you'd expect. Not that this means that you're necessarily bad at predicting things; it's just that the writers did a good job with the story. It never completely strays away from the familiar, however, but it's fresh enough to merit watching. As for Rayearth I'd probably do the first series if I showed it, but right now it's more likely that I'd go with another series.

Lets hope the plot is better than I thought. But the main character is annoying. I'm happy with our selection. I'll be watching Speed Grapher over the summer. I'd like to suggest " Welcome to the NHK" too, for a humor and "slice of life (of a hikikomori)" replacement for Zetsubo Sensei. Or at least I recommend Prime watch it sometime or another.

For those of you interested in what people liked the most, here's the results from our last club meeting. The scale is from 1-5, 1 being horrible and 5 being awesome.
Bounen no xamdou Average = 4 toradora Average = 3.875 shangri-la Average = 3.85 speed Grapher Average = 3.33 kaleido Star Average = 3.1 natsume yuujinchou Average = 3 Ramen Fighter Miki Average = 2.75
It seems the clear winners are Bounen no Xamdou and Toradora, with Shangri-la making it into third place. As such, Xamdou and Toradora will be part of our line-up next year. So here's our tentative schedule:
Bounen no Xamdou Toradora Excel Saga Eden of the East (plus some other 13-episode series) [empty slot] [empty slot]
For the empty slots, expect a shoujo of some sort and an experimental series (a la' Kaiba) of some sort to even out our schedule. Since Eden of the East is only half a season, I'll need something to fill in that blank as well later in the year.
As for Welcome to the NHK, I like that show a lot too. I'll think about inserting it if I can't fill those empty slots with anything else worth watching.
I'm ready to buckle down this summer and wade through the onslaught of shoujo suggestions for something that the people will enjoy! Wish me luck!
