Now that we've started into our new episode previews, I thought it would be prudent to also commence a thread reaching out to the club for suggestions of things to show. Though suggestions must filter through me and Sasha before hitting the big screen, we're open to pretty much anything. Here's a general sense of what we're looking for when we preview a new show: 1. We don't tend to show overtly mainstream stuff (Shonen Jump series, things that have been aired on Cartoon Network, etc.) not because we're judging them, but because the people who want to watch them are generally already watching them. 2. New and niche (lesser-known, indy) anime series are preferred because they tend not to have been seen by many people. We want to broaden your horizons at Greenwood. It's possible for a mainstream series to make it to a preview if it falls under one of these categories. 3. If the series hold historical significance to anime as a whole, then it's also more likely to make it through to club. If you post a series that you think pertains to this category, say something about its historical significance because I may not know. 4. If it It falls into a genre we're not already previewing/planning on watching then you have a higher chance of getting the preview through. One of the things we try to do is span a wide variety of genres. So, for example, if we already have several mech anime series that we're previewing, it's less likely that your preview will make it to the big screen if it's another mech series. The same goes to any genre. We also try to shoot for a 50/50 split between lighthearted/funny series and serious series. 5. If more than one person suggests the same series, it's more likely to make it through. Only pick a series you genuinely want previewed though, not some series that your friend convinced you to pick for his/her sake. Also, if you post a suggestion, please give a link to a description of the series. Here's my agenda thus far: Heroman Stan Lee + anime = enough said www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11266Durarara!! From the same writer and director as "Baccano!", this is mine and Sasha's pick for the best show of the Spring 2010 season. It's known for being funny and offbeat, but I personally like it for the intricate and extremely satisfying story. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10947Arakawa Under the Bridge The newest series from the Director of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, this series seems to have a similar content ratio: equal parts hilarity and nonsense (with hopefully less of a reliance on cultural references, but no guarantees there) www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11188[Undetermined Shojou that people will hopefully like more than Honey and Clover. Sasha's looking into this one for me] Other than these four, we have a record-breaking 6 more preview slots open this year, so hit us with your suggestions. Once our complete line up of previews has been picked, then I'll post an omnibus list for ease of reference while voting.

My hesitation concerning strike witches is that it only really falls into one of the aforementioned categories (ie, that it's in a "genre" we weren't already planning on screening). Also, on a personal note, though I know I didn't specify this in the above categories, in the main slot of shows I try to choose things that are at least somewhat mentally stimulating. I'm not trying to bash on strike witches for what it is, but it's hard to argue that it's mentally stimulating when the show's most well-known episode consists of the main characters stealing one another's panties for 22 minutes. Fanservice, when used for laughs, can achieve this I suppose, but Strike Witches isn't a comedy either. I'm not entirely ruling it out because it is somewhat entertaining and outlandish, but if we do screen it it'll be more towards the end of the quarter after the other slots have been decided. Also, an update: I originally said we have 6 empty slots, but we've since introduced Skullman into the mix and missed a week of new shows due to a meeting on the future of the club, so now there's four empty slots. Also, since we're already previewing 2 BONES series, I doubt another one will make the list of previews even if it were to fall into all of the aforementioned categories. Since people have been less than forthcoming about posting new series suggestions, here's a couple that I remember: The Skullman BONES series based on a successful manga series. That's the extent of my knowledge. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7467Tenchi Muyo! GXP A spin off of the popular Tenchi Muyo series by the director of Excel Saga, Shinichi Watanabe. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=312

Hades Project Zeorymer OAV 4 episodes about 25 minutes each www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=27Evil organization, makes 8 mecha of vast power, one is stolen along with the embryo of it's future pilot. About 17 years later the organization TRIES TO TAKE OVER ZEH WORLD! Takes a more dark approach to mecha anime and provides plenty of great twists.

I really think Saikano would work. I have heard the anime adaptation of it was pretty top notch.

I really think Saikano would work. I have heard the anime adaptation of it was pretty top notch. Saikano is pretty decent, but unfortunately the anime is nowhere near as good as the AMAZING manga. If I hadn't read the manga first I might have enjoyed it more, though, so maybe it could fit for club. It's short too, if I remember. And for those who don't know what it is: www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=914Basically, it's a love story where one of the young lovers is a powerful cyborg weapon under government control. It sounds cliche but it isn't. And if anyone out there hasn't checked out the manga it's one of the most touching series I've ever read...if you can stomach a lot of mature sexual situations (I'd say just about every volume has sex of some sort in it). We'll keep the series on our radar. Also, I'm thinking of screening "His and Her Circumstances" (aka "Kare Kano") for a classic insertion into our shoujo slot. Other than Nana I can't think of any shoujo I would recommend more. If that doesn't sell you, perhaps the fact that most of the series is directed by Hideaki Anno of Evangelion fame. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=392Addition: Here's two things I've found in the throws of research. House of Five Leaves: A cool looking samurai anime with a unique art style: www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11176The Tatami Galaxy (aka Yojouchan Shiwa Taikei) A new anime by the director of Kaiba and Cat Soup. If you're were in club when we screened these, then it shouldn't need an introduction other than that. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11200

How about Kūchū Buranko? I think it could definitely go into the weird/experimental category, the animation and overall story is pretty trippy. I haven't been at UCR this year so idk if you guys showed this, since it aired in fall '09. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10953

I'll give it a shot.

Now that we're in the final stretch, it's time to vote! Here's the 11 series we previewed all compiled together for ease of reference... Heroman Stan Lee + anime = enough said. It doesn't have any basis in reality, and why should it? Comic book fun mixed with over-the-top action. The main character finds a toy robot in the trash and repairs it. The toy gets hit by lightning and suddenly grows in size, gaining massive strength and powers in the process. This is Heroman. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11266Durarara!! From the same writer and director as "Baccano!", this is mine and Sasha's pick for the best show of the Spring 2010 season. It's known for being funny and offbeat, but I personally like it for the intricate and extremely satisfying story. Each episode follows a different character in the large cast as we learn about the characters and the odd events occurring in the city they live in. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10947Arakawa Under the Bridge The newest series from the Director of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, this series seems to have a similar content ratio: equal parts hilarity and nonsense, with less of a reliance on cultural references. Our main character becomes engaged to a strange woman living under a bridge after she saves his life. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11188The Skullman BONES series based on a successful manga series. Photographer goes back to his hometown and tries to find out more about the mysterious entity "the Skullman". www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7467Tenchi Muyo! GXP A spin off of the popular Tenchi Muyo series by the director of Excel Saga, Shinichi Watanabe. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=312House of Five Leaves: A cool looking samurai anime with a unique art style. A ronin struggles to find a job until someone hires him as a bodyguard: www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11176The Tatami Galaxy (aka Yojouchan Shiwa Taikei) A new anime by the director of Kaiba and Cat Soup. If you're were in club when we screened these, then it shouldn't need an introduction other than that. A student lives in the same building as a god of matchmaking who has promised to put him into a relationship with one of his friends. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11200Working!! A restaurant hires a new male employee, who is in turn trained by a uber-kawaii little girl who turns out to be his senior. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=11017Revolutionary Girl Utena Our front runner for shoujo series, this has elements that even male otaku will dig: pretty girls and guys, lots of flowers and romance, yuri undertones, epic music and sword fights. Utena saves a girl known as the "Rose Bride" and then must duel various members of the student council over possession of the Rose Bride. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=207Texhnolyze Though the first episode doesn't delve into any of the main plot, the story centers around a prize fighter who has several limbs amputated by an enraged fight promoter. He is taken in by a female doctor, who turns him into the next generation of Texhnolyze. He must then fight to survive in the underground city as war breaks loose around him. Written by and with character designs from the same guys responsible for Serial Experiments Lain www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2304Kūchū Buranko An extremely odd doctor helps a wide variety of patients suffering from equally odd symptoms. www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10953
