Dear Greenwood,
As you know, I've told you all that I work for the Campus Safety Escort Service for a year. Today I went to a retraining meeting and the Campus Police Department has informed me on several issues regarding assault and robberies, gravely concerning me and other CSES employees.
Both of the recent robberies occurred when students were on their i-pods and cellphones while walking. In addition, several CSES employees said that they too had been robbed while listening to music or on a phone.
I asked CPD if we could contact them and they said yes. However, they said that they will only walk up to campus limits, so they may not walk you too far from campus, this includes areas like Stonehaven and possibly the UV Towers.
If you live at the dorms, you should be fine.
The reason why I brought this up to attention is because our club will be running up to 11:00 PM (sometimes 12:00 depending on people) on nights we have events. Scheduled viewings we usually end at around 9:30 - 10:00 PM.
Here are a couple of things you should do to keep yourself for AFTER HOURS from club.
* If you are a UCR student, please program the EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM onto your cell phones. You may find this address on your GROWL account. (Go to "addresses" and input your information there).
* If you live on campus please call the following numbers: (951) 827- 3337 for CAMPUS SAFETY ESCORT SERVICE & NON-EMERGENCY POLICE BUSINESS for (951) 827- 5222. Program these numbers under your cell phone.
* Please use the buddy system. Don't walk alone, walk with other members from club who are going in your direction.
* Greenwood, even if a fellow member is not walking in your immediate direction, please keep careful watch on them and make sure they are going into a safe area.
* DO NOT listen to your i-pod or talk on your cellphone while walking. Even if you are calling your beloved or your best friend they cannot physically be there to help you. In addition, you will be in too much shock to tell them exactly what is happening to you and/or where you are located. (Btw, GPS won't help; it'll be too late once the CPD get there.)
* Be aware of your surroundings. If you see any suspicious activity, report and walk away from the suspicious area and tell other Greenwood members to avoid the area!
* Lastly, if you are in a real emergency to get somewhere, PLEASE notify a staff member.
STAFF WILL NOT LEAVE until EVERYONE in club has left the building.
Remember, you don't want to get robbed or raped. So please take this seriously! THIS MESSAGE APPLIES TO BOTH MALES AND FEMALES.
Best regards,
